Try a limited palette

Small palettes are fun and encourage exploration in mixing and prompt creative choices on how you represent what you see or imagine. A good one is the 4 colour Zorn palette using cadmium red light (or vermillion), yellow ochre light, ivory black and titanium white.

Try mediums to manipulate flow,texture and drying

The high quality oils are high in pigment without dryers or fillers present in many mass produced paints. As pigments have different drying times, and work differently with the binder, its worth trying different mediums such as painting butter and/or the fast drying oil glaze to work it how you wish.
